By Robbie Faulk The Webster Progress-Times For nearly a century, the Wofford family has cherished the Eupora Eagles like no other. All the way back in 1948, Joe Fox Wofford estab- lished and presented an award given annu- ally to the best senior football player and rep- resentative on and off the field for the Eagles. The Wofford Trophy has been awarded to football greats like Cliff Davis, Derrick Jones and, most recently, Ty Murphy. Additionally, the family provided the first lights for the foot- ball stadium in 1940 and has had its name ever since. Dec.

19 brought a reaffirmation from the commitment to support the school. grandson, Joe Fox Wofford Jr. of Hernando, wrote a check for $5,000 to add to the principal in a trust to continue to help the Eagle football program grow and flourish. This includes the presentation of the Wofford Trophy during the annual Athletic Banquet for EHS, the next of which will be May 14. The Wofford family established the trust fund in 1989 with an initial donation of $1,000 for maintaining the purchase, preserva- tion and presentation of the trophy through EHS.

The selection of the recipient is the decision of the head football coach, Woffords have been longtime support- ers of our program dat- ing back to the 1940s. They wanted to make sure that we had the support for years to coach Brad Gray said. such a great family and big supporters of our foot- ball program. so thankful for them and everything done for us over the Under watch the last three seasons, the Eagles are 21-14 with a Class 2A, Region 4 championship and a North State title. Both of those accomplish- ments came in 2022 when Gray helped the Eagles to an 11-3 mark and the first 10-win season since 2014.

Eupora had a rebuilding season this year but still managed to make the playoffs and see the building blocks of the future. With the help of people like the Woffords and their commitment to moving forward, the future is bright for the Eagles. really gen- uine people and repre- sent everything good about small com- munities and what sports can do for those communities. It defi- nitely encourages you and reminds you why you do it and what doing it Gray said. have someone that is living off in Desoto County like Mr.
